Mark Kendall Bingham was born May 22, 1970. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a keen rugby player, playing for the San Francisco Fog RFC and later the Gotham Knights RFC. He was openly gay. He once protected his boyfriend of 6 years from a mugging at gunpoint, and was proud of a scar he got after being gored at the running of the bulls in Pamplona. On September 11, 2001, he was one of the passengers of Flight 93, who helped to overpower hijackers and down the plane in a field some 80 miles from it’s target. Nobody on the plane survived - nobody on the ground was injured.

The fact he was openly gay seems woefully absent in most mainstream media I found to write this little piece. And it wasn’t because it “didn’t matter”, because mention is made of many of the other hero’s (opposite sex) significant others in these articles. Please don’t let this hero’s full story be erased or ignored.

As I walked by myself, I talked to myself,
and thus myself said to me:
“Look for thyself and care for thyself,
for nobody cares for thee.”
So I turned to myself and I answered myself
in the self-same reverie. I said
“Look for myself or look not for myself,
the self-same thing it shall be.
